About The Spindle Tree
The Spindle Tree was opened in June 1989 as a craft cooperative for Tasmanian fibre artisans. Two stong principles of the cooperative are that all works are constructed from natural fibres and are made by Tasmanian artisans. Currently we have an active membership of 17 artisans. We also stock work from number of Tasmanian suppliers ensuring that local artisans have an outlet for their work.
You can find us at Shop 009 within the Salamanca Art Centre, Hobart, Tasmania. When looking for the shop at the Salamanca Art Centre look for the spinning wheel and colourful mohair hanks.
We specialise in knitting, crocheting, felting, dyeing, weaving, and spinning in natural fibres. Items in the store are highly individualistic with members often creating their own designs using hand spun and hand dyed fibres. Many of the members have been awarded prizes at local and interstate agricultural shows. Recently four members recieved a number of first placings at the Hobart Royal Show.
New work is accepted and on display every Thursday. This ensures that the stock is ever evolving and reflective of the interest and exploration of the fibre artisan who has produced the garment/item.
This year we launched the Spindle Tree Mohair - mohair dyed in colours representative of the spindle tree, our namesake. The colour combination was created by one of our members as part of our 20 year celebration.
Last year we celebrated our 20th anniversary with the Cooperative Fibres exhibition held from 3-8 July 2009 in the Sidespace Gallery at Salamanca Art Centre. A continuation of this work is the e-book that is being developed with a publication timeframe of 2010 and picture files of founding members, past members and current members.
